Understanding Fabric GSM: A Buyer's Guide to Choosing the Right Weight

When sourcing apparel in bulk, one of the most overlooked specifications is GSM — grams per square meter — which measures the weight and density of a fabric.

## What GSM Actually Means

The higher the GSM, the heavier and typically more durable the fabric. A lightweight summer t-shirt might sit around 140-160 GSM, while a premium heavyweight hoodie can run 320-400 GSM or more.

## Common GSM Ranges by Product

- T-Shirts: 140-200 GSM (lightweight to mid-weight)

- Polo Shirts: 180-220 GSM

- Hoodies & Sweatshirts: 280-400 GSM

- Denim: 300-450 GSM (measured slightly differently, often in oz/yd²)

- Sportswear: 150-220 GSM, depending on the fabric blend and moisture-wicking requirements

## Why This Matters for Your Order

Choosing the right GSM affects cost, feel, durability, and how the garment performs in different climates. A buyer shipping to a colder market will want a heavier GSM than one supplying activewear for hot climates.

## Our Recommendation

With 20+ years of manufacturing experience, we help buyers match GSM and fabric composition to their target market and price point before production begins — avoiding costly reorders or customer complaints down the line.
